WILLIAMSBURG — To help people experiencing homelessness be more prepared for the cold this winter, Williamsburg Podiatry is hosting its first Winter Shoe Drive for Williamsburg House of Mercy.
The local podiatry practice is collecting gently used men’s and women’s winter boots, work boots, tennis shoes and new socks, as well as monetary donations.
The donations will be given to Williamsburg House of Mercy, 10 Harrison Ave, a nonprofit organization that provides support to homeless individuals and families.
“We are so grateful for local businesses, like Williamsburg Podiatry, who intentionally seek out their own niche ways of serving the homeless,” Nicole Lancour, director of communications, said. “Shoes are an often forgotten necessity, especially in the winter months. Our homeless individuals and families will be better equipped for work and school because of our community’s generosity.”
Winter shoes are one of many types of items being collected for House of Mercy this holiday season.
The organization is also holding a Christmas Market this year, in which the community can shop online or drop off items for House of Mercy to provide gifts for families to pick out for their children, including clothes and toys.
House of Mercy also held a Thanksgiving Food Drive to distribute Thanksgiving ingredients to families to make their own meals at home.
Williamsburg Podiatry will be accepting donations for the winter shoe drive until Dec. 15, so the items can be delivered on Dec. 16.
Their collection box is located in their office at 356 McLaws Circle, Suite 1, open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The office is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
